Summary and Notes: Elrond makes a decision. For the ghost challenge. Feedback will elevate you to god status. :)

“Please, my Lord. He will be safe here. There is no other place for him. Do not make me beg this of you.” Gilraen stood before Elrond with her child in her arms. Lovely, proud, strong, and loyal: the wife of the late Arathorn was all of these. But still the Elf-lord hesitated. Something inside him whispered, feelings he could not sort out. He peered closely at the boy child and felt something hitch in his heart as the infant opened his eyes to stare directly at him. Emotions stirred in Elrond, looking into the bright eyes of Aragorn, son of Arathorn. But made no answer.

To her credit, Gilraen neither flinched nor fidgeted under the lord’s stern eye, though it took all her energy not to. After a silence that seemed an eternity, Elrond spoke. “I must consider this, if you would excuse me for a moment.” With that, he began to walk away, leaving the confused woman under the tree in the gardens of Imladris, where she first sought his counsel.

Slightly disheartened, Gilraen sighed softly and prayed for the best. Aragorn stirred in her arms and gave a soft cry. Gathering him close, she began to sing softly to him, an old verse in Elvish, a soft lullaby.

Though he had walked some distance from her, Elrond’s sharp ears picked up and instantly recognized the melody. He turned quickly to look at the young woman with her son. As she continued to sing, Elrond heard another voice join hers, male and eerily familiar. Watching closely, he let the song take him back through seasons and ages, to his long ago childhood. Enthralled in memory, the end of the song and the absence of melody were heartbreakingly shocking.

Gilraen held her son close, glad for the melody taught to her by her husband’s family, one that never failed to sooth her son. As she smiled down on her son, glowing with love for him, Elrond heard the melody sung again, softly. Then: “He is of my blood, brother, and I love him well. He will do great things, do not fear.”

Elrond closed his eyes, his heart clenched in his chest. “I will do this if you ask it of me, Elros.”

“Do I even need to ask?”

“Never.” Through his tangled emotions, Elrond managed to smile. “I miss you, dear brother.”

“And I you. You will see me in him, I think. But very little of you. We were very different, were we not?”

“Very. And I love you still.”

“Care for him well. My love to you always, dear brother.”

“Valar guide you, Elros.” And with that, Elrond knew that his brother’s spirit was gone, lost to him once again. A fresh grief nearly seized his heart, 'til he looked at the mother and child who stood across the garden.

Resolved, Elrond walked over and held out his arms to hold the child. Perhaps his brother was not gone. After all, love is something that can never cease to exist.

Wow! Though I knew that Aragorn was descended from Elros it never occurred to me that Elrond might see a bit of his brother in him. That was brilliant insight on your part! Really excellent story, thank you : )

Thank you very much.

I really like Elros. He doesn't get a lot of fic in the fandom, however. At least as far as I've seen. But that's probably part of his charm for me. Same reason I write Finadulis and Theodred, come to think of it. :) Yay for the obsucre but no less deserving characters!
