Okay, long ago
dien challenged me to a duel. She told me two Firefly pairings and I had to make them work in a drabble. I just ran across them again and I figured I'd inflict them on you.
"Jayne, move your hand before I’m forced to shoot you."
Jayne snickered. "Ain't nothin' personal, Zoe. We're mighty cramped in here."
"Jayne. I'm not gonna say it again." The click of a gun being readied cut through the tiny alcove where they waited for Mal. Jayne moved his hand.
"Gorram, Zoe, you ain't hardly a woman."
"You think so?" Casually, she closed the small space between them; he could feel her. "You really think so?"
"Ah…" was all he managed before Zoe nearly killed him with a swift knee to the balls.
Woman must have been learning tricks from Inara.
River knew that he was a ghost, because she wasn't the only one who saw him. The hallucinations were in her mind, not something that the other could quantify.
But he was definitely a ghost. Mostly he was on the bridge, because that's where he belonged. Zoe didn't come up there anymore. The captain just pretended he didn't see.
But River knew, and River listened when she heard his laugh and sometimes she could hear his stories. She stopped screaming when the nightmares stole her sleep and went to the bridge instead. There were dinosaurs there. And it was safe.
