Jun. 7th, 2004 01:22 pmYou know, last night I was thinking about music and about fandom as I am wont to do, because if I don't I go crazy.
And so I had this song in my head- "How do ya do?"- it's an old song.
Then I started thinking about the kind of music in Middle Earth, trying to figure out what kinds there were. Near as I can figure there are:
The music of the Elves- I assume it's sweet, light and very melodic or epic by turns.
The music of Rohan- epic, celtic
The music of the Shire- simple styles, drinking songs and folk songs. I imagine they have wonderful lullabies.
The music of Gondor- i.e. "We're like the Elves, only not!" I think there is some folk influence, though.
These are the major ones, near as I can figure.
Now this brings me back to the song in my head. I can't quite place the style- somewhere between bluegrass and dixie- at any rate, it's a style that Middle Earth doesn't have. Come to think of it, the music in Middle Earth is very limited- no fun tribal beats that we know of, unless it comes from Harad or summat, and then it's not spoken of too much.
And because of that, I doubt that anything resembling jazz or soul or rock and roll would ever develop in that particular culture. Which I think is unfortunate, really. There's all this great classic and stylized music, but no really fun "raw" music.
If it were to develop, I think it might come out of a blending of Rohan and the Shire. The could conceivably form a style of bluegrass. But I'm not sure about anything else.
Anyone with more knowledge than me care to comment? I'm mostly talking out my butt, here, but it was something to keep me interested at work.
